Patients can now access specialized care for prostate, menopause, and eyesight issues through the latest NHS Online hospitals. Upon referral from their general practitioner, individuals will have the opportunity to consult with experts via video calls using the NHS app. This initiative aims to streamline the process of receiving specialized care, reduce waiting times, and enable patients to connect with doctors nationwide without the need for unnecessary hospital visits.
During his speech at the Labour conference in September, Keir Starmer heralded a new era as he introduced plans for the NHS Online service. The NHS has announced that the initial focus will be on addressing nine common conditions, with the first patients expected to benefit from the service next year. These conditions include women’s health concerns such as severe menopause symptoms and menstrual issues that may indicate underlying conditions like endometriosis or fibroids.
The NHS Online service will also cater to prostate-related problems like enlargement and elevated prostate-specific antigen levels, as well as eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Additionally, support will be provided for other challenging conditions like iron deficiency anemia and inflammatory bowel disease. While tests and procedures will still be conducted at local healthcare facilities, clinicians will have the ability to remotely review patient records through the new system.
Patients will retain the option for in-person consultations, especially for physical examinations or procedures, which can be arranged either at hospitals or local healthcare centers. The NHS emphasizes that the new approach aims to enhance accessibility to healthcare services and improve the overall patient experience.
Professor Stella Vig, national clinical director for elective care at NHS England, highlighted the significance of providing quicker access to diagnosis and treatments for the identified conditions, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on people’s lives. Dr. Sue Mann, national clinical director in women’s health at NHS England, underlined the importance of expedited access to effective treatments for women experiencing menstrual problems or menopausal symptoms, emphasizing the convenience and efficiency of accessing consultations from home through NHS Online.
The NHS app, available for download on mobile devices, offers various functionalities, including ordering prescriptions, scheduling appointments, and viewing GP health records. This innovative approach to healthcare delivery aligns with the NHS’s commitment to enhancing patient care and accessibility to medical services.
