Lidl has once again secured the title of the most budget-friendly supermarket, edging out Aldi for the second time in recent months, as reported by Which? A comparison of prices for a standard shopping list of 70 items revealed that at Lidl, the total cost averaged £120.46 in October, or £120.38 for members of the Lidl Plus loyalty program. In contrast, the same items at Aldi amounted to an average of £121.
According to Which? analysis, Aldi had been recognized as the cheapest supermarket 22 out of the past 24 months. The shopping list encompassed both branded and own-label products, including items such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
For Tesco shoppers, the total bill stood at £134.89 last month, or £133.38 with a Clubcard. On the other hand, Sainsbury’s required a payment of £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card.
Which? also conducted a price comparison for a more extensive list of 187 items, omitting Aldi and Lidl due to their smaller product range compared to other supermarkets. Asda emerged as the most cost-effective option for a larger shopping list, priced at £469.11, while the same items would have cost £476.11 for Tesco Clubcard holders and £481.34 at Morrisons with a More loyalty card.
Waitrose, on the other hand, was found to be the priciest option for both smaller and larger shopping lists in October. The analysis by Which? factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts where applicable, excluding multi-buy promotions.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, highlighted Lidl’s achievement as the cheapest UK supermarket for the second time in a short span, emphasizing the importance of price comparison for savings, especially during the approaching festive season. She also pointed out that Asda remains a top choice for budget-conscious shoppers seeking a wider selection of branded products, with potential savings of up to 26% by choosing wisely among supermarkets.
