Lidl has introduced a new self-scanning feature in its loyalty app that can help reduce waiting time at the checkout. This update allows customers to scan items using their smartphones before making a payment at the register. The feature was tested in a trial involving friends and family at four stores earlier this year and is expected to be rolled out next year.
The supermarket chain has filed a trademark in Europe and the UK for “Lidl & Go” related to digital payment and scan-and-shop systems in its stores. According to Shyam Unarket, Customer Relations Director at Lidl GB, integrating payment functionality into the Lidl Plus app is a significant step in their digital evolution. He emphasized their commitment to investing in technologies that simplify the shopping experience and provide more flexibility for customers.
In related news, Lidl has been named the cheapest supermarket by Which? for the second time recently, beating out Aldi. A comparison of a shopping list containing 70 items revealed that the average cost at Lidl was £120.46 in October, or £120.38 for Lidl Plus members. In contrast, the same items cost an average of £121 at Aldi.
Tesco shoppers would have spent £134.89 last month, or £133.38 with a Clubcard, while Sainsbury’s customers would have paid £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card. Which? also conducts price comparisons for a broader list of 187 items, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their smaller product ranges compared to other supermarkets.
