Zambia’s Hichilema Wins Second Term Amid Election Controversy

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema secured a second consecutive 5-year term in office, facing a resilient opposition leader who tapped into public discontent despite economic improvements. Election results revealed Hichilema garnered approximately 60% of valid votes, while his main rival, Brian Mundubile, received around 38%. The election commission officially declared Hichilema the winner, marking his seventh presidential bid, expectedly benefiting from his incumbency status compared to Mundubile’s first attempt at the presidency.

Throughout his campaign, the 64-year-old Hichilema emphasized his economic achievements since assuming office amidst a debt crisis in 2021, particularly highlighting Zambia’s strategic position in the global competition for its copper resources. The election, initially calm, witnessed heightened tensions post-voting. International observers, including the European Union, acknowledged the peaceful conduct of the election but flagged constraints on fundamental freedoms within the electoral process.

Following the election, a series of incidents unfolded, including the arrest of 11 individuals, including opposition leaders, during a violent altercation. Subsequently, the electoral commission temporarily halted vote counting due to reported violence against polling officials and ballot paper theft. Allegations of result tampering surfaced, with Mundubile calling for an independent investigation, a claim contested by Hichilema’s camp.

Concerns were raised by the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops regarding the army’s involvement during vote tallying, emphasizing the constitutionally assigned role of the police in maintaining election order. Although the opposition may challenge the election outcome, analysts suggest the likelihood of success is slim. While isolated political disturbances could occur, widespread unrest is not anticipated in the aftermath of the election.
