“Reviving Tradition: Family Dinners Strengthen Bonds”

Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my cherished childhood memories revolves around our family dinners on a small beige mat. These evenings were illuminated by the setting sun, creating a cozy atmosphere as we savored delicious Pakistani dishes like biryani and butter chicken with homemade naan. Seated cross-legged in a circle, we shared stories and moments from our day, carrying on a tradition passed down from my father’s upbringing in Lahore.

As time passed, the busyness of life caused my siblings and me to drift away from these family dinners. It had been over a decade since we last gathered on that humble mat. However, a reawakening of this tradition occurred during a Thanksgiving dinner when I invited friends of diverse cultural backgrounds to experience our unique way of dining. Setting up the worn-out beige mat in the living room, we formed a circle, reminiscing and enjoying the togetherness it brought.

The revival of this tradition not only bridged cultural gaps but also strengthened the bond within our family. Inspired by the Thanksgiving experience, my father decided to reintroduce the tradition, bringing us closer despite our hectic schedules. Now, we make a conscious effort to prioritize family dinner time, whether on the familiar mat or around a formal dining table, fostering togetherness and unity for generations to come.
