“Doctor Urges Women: Don’t Overlook Cancer Warning Signs”

An urgent alert has been issued by a general practitioner regarding a significant symptom of cancer that many women may not be recognizing. This particular indicator demands an immediate medical evaluation, according to the expert.

In anticipation of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week commencing on January 19, Dr. Rupa Parmar highlighted some crucial signs of the disease to be vigilant about. She cautioned that a considerable number of women overlook their essential cervical cancer screenings.

Additionally, the most prevalent symptoms are frequently disregarded. These could encompass weight loss, which might be misinterpreted as a consequence of reverting to a regular diet post the indulgences of the Christmas season.

Dr. Parmar, a GP and Medical Director at Midland Health, explained, “Cancer cells disrupt the body’s ability to absorb nutrients from food, leading to accelerated calorie consumption and subsequent weight loss.”

“Unexplained weight loss is typically the most conspicuous indication of cancer and warrants prompt investigation,” she added. However, unexplained weight loss is not exclusive to cervical cancer but is also a common indicator across different types of cancer.

According to Cancer Research UK, weight loss is frequently observed in individuals with cancer and often prompts their initial medical consultation. Lung cancer and upper gastrointestinal cancer are cited as two common cancer types affected by weight loss.

Dr. Parmar also outlined other warning signs of cervical cancer. She noted that conditions such as vaginal dryness, infections, and skin issues can contribute to pain during intercourse. Unusual pain during sex, particularly if uncommon for the individual, might indicate cervical cancer as the tumor progresses and impacts nearby tissues.

Experiencing three or more urinary tract infections (UTIs) within a year could signal an underlying condition like cervical cancer. Dr. Parmar clarified that while recurrent UTIs do not directly cause cancer, they can serve as a symptom when the cancer has advanced and obstructed the urinary tract.

Persistent and severe lower back or pelvic pain without an identifiable cause could be indicative of cervical cancer, particularly when accompanied by other symptoms. As the cancer advances, the pain intensifies, and it may worsen during sexual activity, urination, or bowel movements.

Any abnormal bleeding, such as bleeding during intercourse, spotting between periods, or post-menopausal bleeding, may signify cervical cancer. Unusually heavy menstrual flow or prolonged menstrual cycles are also concerning indicators of an underlying issue.

Changes in vaginal discharge could indicate abnormalities in the cervix. An increase in volume, unusual odor, abnormal color, or presence of blood may suggest that the cancer has impacted adjacent tissues.

Individuals experiencing any of these symptoms are advised to seek medical advice promptly.
