In this nation, I firmly believe that each newborn child should have an equal opportunity to establish a prosperous life, including access to quality education, a comfortable residence, and regular meals. Last year, during the Budget announcement, I made a commitment to eliminate the restriction on the number of children supported by welfare benefits.
The prior administration’s enforcement of the two-child limit resulted in depriving numerous children of basic necessities like food, warmth, and clothing, exacerbating financial difficulties for many families. Additionally, this policy introduced the controversial rape clause into our welfare system. As the former Labour Chancellor, I take pride in abolishing this restriction and implementing initiatives such as free breakfast clubs and school meals for children whose parents receive Universal Credit, aiming to uplift over half a million children from poverty by 2030.
These efforts will provide half a million children with a better foundation for their futures, allowing them to attend school without the burdens and detrimental effects of poverty. Recently, I had the privilege of meeting some of these children and advocates for women’s rights at Downing Street, where I witnessed their relief, determination, and stories of resilience in the face of adversity.
Today’s parliamentary vote is a significant milestone in supporting these families, as it signifies progress towards dismantling a harmful policy that has persisted for too long. As I cast my vote tonight, my decision is clear, and I urge other parties to justify their stance. However, our mission does not end here; we must continue to strive for a society where every child receives an equitable start in life, and every parent is treated with the respect and assistance they deserve. This commitment is the driving force behind my political and governmental involvement, and I remain resolute in delivering on this promise.
