“Poundland Restructuring: 150 Stores Close, 2,200 Jobs Cut”

Poundland recently announced the closure of nearly 150 stores and the elimination of 2,200 jobs as part of its restructuring plan. The budget retailer now operates 651 stores, down from approximately 800, with its workforce reduced from 14,200 to around 12,000 employees.

As part of the overhaul, Poundland shut down two warehouses located in Darton, South Yorkshire, and Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands. The retailer was acquired for £1 by investment firm Gordon Brothers in June last year, avoiding administration after its rescue strategy, which included store closures, was sanctioned by the High Court in August.

Poundland has completed its restructuring initiative but acknowledges that there is still work ahead to regain stability. The company stated that any future closures would be due to regular business lease events common for a retailer with a large store network.

Recent data from Poundland indicates a 2.9% decline in like-for-like underlying sales for the quarter ending on December 28 as the company reduced prices to realign with its discount-oriented approach. However, comparable store sales by volume increased by 2%. In the first quarter, underlying earnings surged by £8.4 million to £17.3 million, meeting expectations.

Barry Williams, the managing director of Poundland, emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to enhance the business through lower prices and a more focused product range. The company’s strategy for 2026 will prioritize offering the product ranges and price simplicity desired by customers across various departments, including clothing, homewares, and groceries.

Poundland revamped its pricing structure by reintroducing straightforward £1, £2, and £3 pricing on groceries at all UK locations, with a majority of grocery items priced at £1. The company also discontinued certain categories like frozen foods and some chilled products, along with terminating its online services.

Furthermore, Poundland is reintroducing its in-house designed Pep&Co clothing line to stores in the UK and Ireland, with 90% of items priced below £10. An upcoming nationwide advertising campaign will highlight the value of Poundland’s product offerings.
