The Winter Olympics village has reportedly exhausted its condom supply despite distributing 10,000 free condoms to athletes. The accommodation where Olympians reside during the Games is famously known for its lively atmosphere, with numerous stories of amorous encounters emerging over time.
Officials have provided free contraceptives to address any potential issues. However, while 200,000 condoms were given out at the Paris Summer Games in 2024, only 10,000 were distributed at Milano Cortina, where the number of athletes is significantly lower than in Paris.
With approximately 10,500 participants in Paris compared to just under 3,000 in northern Italy currently, the quantity of condoms provided in Milano Cortina has proven to be inadequate. An anonymous athlete revealed to Italian newspaper La Stampa that the supplies ran out in three days, expressing uncertainty about when more would be available.
In an effort to discourage off-camera activities, Olympic organizers have implemented “anti-sex” beds, including a simplified cardboard design. However, reports suggest that this measure has not been effective in reducing such behavior.
This shortage of condoms is not the first at the Olympic Games. Organizers at the Sydney 2000 Games had to order an additional 20,000 condoms after the initial 70,000 ran out. The importance of health and prevention was emphasized to athletes upon their arrival in Milan to prevent any potential spread of sexually transmitted infections.
Former Olympic champions have highlighted the village’s reputation for its provocative atmosphere. One gold medalist, speaking anonymously in a 2012 interview with CNN, acknowledged the prevalent nature of intimate activities among athletes during the Games.
