“Teen confesses to killing five, including sibling”

A 15-year-old adolescent unleashed gunfire in a residential area, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. Among Austin David Thompson’s victims was his own sibling, as he embarked on a disturbing shooting spree near his residence armed with a shotgun and a handgun. Following a prolonged confrontation with law enforcement, the teenager was eventually apprehended in a shed.

Despite claims from Thompson’s legal team that a brain injury sustained in Raleigh, North Carolina, prevented him from explaining his actions, he confessed to five charges of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of assaulting an officer with a gun. Scheduled for sentencing on February 2, Thompson, due to his age at the time of the incident, is ineligible for the death penalty.

Robert Steele, the fiancé of one of the victims, expressed satisfaction with the decision to sentence Thompson to life in prison without parole, citing justice for the lives lost and impacted by the tragedy. The now 18-year-old Thompson, who was set to face trial next month, opted to plead guilty today, with his defense team emphasizing the importance of sparing the community and victims further trauma by avoiding a trial.

During the recent court session, Wake County Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway questioned Thompson, who appeared in a quarter-zip jumper and trousers. Details emerged of Thompson’s violent acts, including fatally shooting his brother and multiple neighbors, resulting in the deaths of Nicole Connors and off-duty police officer Gabriel Torres. Thompson also took the lives of Mary Marshall and Susan Karnatz on a nearby trail, leaving a trail of devastation in the community.

Law enforcement located Thompson, attired in camouflage and carrying a backpack, in a nearby shed and took him into custody after a standoff. While the hearing shed little light on the teen’s motives, a note penned by Thompson explaining the fratricide was mentioned, but its contents were not disclosed. Information from Thompson’s online activity revealed searches related to mass shootings, which his attorney hinted might be contested during sentencing.
