Chester, a city in the UK, was hailed as the ‘world’s most beautiful’, sparking my curiosity to witness its splendor firsthand. Despite the inclement British weather on my journey, with rain and icy winds dampening my spirits, I embarked on my exploration with a hint of skepticism.
Nevertheless, within just thirty minutes of wandering through the city, it became evident why it had secured such prestigious acclaim. Chester seemed frozen in time, with the entrance to the city center passing beneath the arches of the ancient City Walls, the oldest, longest, and most intact Roman walls in Britain.
Ascending some steps to walk atop these fortifications unveiled breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surroundings along a 45-minute loop. Returning to ground level, strolling through the archways felt like stepping onto a movie set, with charming, slightly askew buildings lining the high street, housing a mix of independent shops, bookstores, and cozy cafes interspersed among larger chain stores.
The city offered a harmonious blend of amenities catering to both locals and tourists, from essentials for weekly shopping to unique souvenirs. The timber-framed ‘Rows’ that adorned the high street were particularly striking, providing a covered walkway filled with one-of-a-kind boutiques and shops.
Witnessing a bustling high street was a rarity, yet Chester boasted a steady stream of shoppers and tourists, undeterred by the weather. Beyond the City Walls, history enthusiasts could delve into the beauty of Chester Cathedral and the Roman Amphitheatre. TV aficionados might recognize the Suspension Bridge from “Hollyoaks” as a notable landmark.
Families seeking entertainment could visit Chester Zoo, a short drive away, housing over 30,000 animals. Chester’s pub scene offered a diverse array of traditional pubs, modern breweries, and upscale bars, perfect for a night out in the city’s laid-back ambiance.
With its wealth of history and charm nestled within cobblestone streets, it was no surprise that Chester clinched the title of the world’s most beautiful city in a recent study. Evaluated based on the ‘golden ratio’ principle by Online Mortgage Advisor, Chester excelled with 83.7% of its buildings meeting the criteria.
Beyond the architectural wonders, a brief stroll outside the city unveiled idyllic canalside walks and moorlands, including the scenic Grosvenor Park with its serene pond and lush lawns offering panoramic views of Cheshire countryside. Despite the weather challenges, immersing in one of the trails near the city was a refreshing escape.
Despite the unpredictable UK weather during my visit, Chester’s enduring charm left a lasting impression. The title of the world’s most beautiful city beckons a return visit, with hopes of a sunnier experience next time!
