Iran is facing a wave of anti-government protests that have resulted in numerous casualties, with the threat of further violence looming as President Donald Trump warns of potential military action. Amid the chaos, one shop owner has been handed a death sentence in a chilling turn of events.
The unrest initially erupted in Tehran’s markets due to soaring inflation, leading to a scarcity of essential goods and a surge in prices after the central bank terminated a program that granted certain importers access to discounted US dollars. This move forced merchants to hike prices, exacerbating the situation.
The protests have since spread across all 31 provinces of Iran, leaving a trail of bodies in the streets. The government has acknowledged causing the deaths of over 2,000 individuals involved in the demonstrations. Amongst those affected is 26-year-old Erfan Soltani, who was arrested for his alleged participation in anti-government activities and is set to be executed promptly, without a fair trial or legal representation.
Iran has a history of high execution rates, with more than 972 reported executions in 2024 compared to the US’s 25 during the same period. Human rights advocates condemn the swift and brutal response by Iranian authorities, aiming to quell dissent and instill fear among the populace.
