Young Man with Early-Onset Dementia Donates Brain for Research

A young man, aged 24, passed away from dementia shortly after the holiday season, choosing to donate his brain to aid researchers in comprehending the rare illness that led to his demise. Andre Yarham received a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia at 23 years old, following an initial misdiagnosis of autism.

His mother, Sam Fairbairn, observed concerning changes in his behavior, such as reduced communication, decreased interest in activities, and reluctance to work at Lotus, a sports car company. Initially doubtful of the diagnosis, she sought a specialist’s opinion, and an MRI scan confirmed the presence of dementia, showing brain patterns resembling those of a 70-year-old.

The progression of the disorder rendered Andre nonverbal, necessitating full-time care from his mother, who eventually had to give up her job. He later moved to The Maltings care home in Norfolk, where the staff praised his warmth, energy, wit, and personality.

This facility caters to adults with learning disabilities and featured Andre in FitzRoy’s 2024 Christmas campaign. Unfortunately, his condition worsened last month, leading to palliative care with a prognosis of only a few weeks left to live.

Andre passed away on December 27 at Priscilla Bacon Lodge hospice in Norwich. His mother revealed that his brain had been donated to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for research, expressing hope that it could benefit other families in the future.

In a tribute, Toby Sutherland, the deputy manager at the care home, described Andre as a courageous individual who lost his battle with dementia. The team at The Maltings dedicated themselves to providing exceptional, personalized care throughout his journey.

Andre’s funeral is scheduled for January 27 at Breckland Crematorium, expected to be attended by over 100 vehicles in his honor.
