“Worries Mount Over Hunger-Striking Prisoner’s Condition”

The family of a hunger striker in prison is deeply concerned and has urgently appealed to the government for intervention. Kamran Ahmed, a 28-year-old from London, has been on a hunger strike for 44 days to protest in support of Palestine. He is currently held in HMP Pentonville on remand for allegedly breaking into a UK site of an Israel-based defense company.

Despite being hospitalized due to critical health issues during his hunger strike, Ahmed remains resolute in his stance, believing that sacrificing his life for his cause would be justified. Palestine Action has taken legal action against Justice Secretary David Lammy, accusing the government of disregarding its own prison safety policies, a claim the government denies.

The Ministry of Justice has refuted the allegations, emphasizing the importance of prisoner well-being and rejecting any incentives that might encourage hunger strikes. Kamran’s family, particularly his sister Shahmina Alam, has been vocal in urging government officials to engage with the hunger strikers and address the situation with empathy and humanity.

Amid growing concerns about Kamran’s deteriorating health, his family has expressed distress over the lack of updates on his condition. His mother, Sanwara Begum, fears for his worsening health and the impact on their family. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has defended the government’s position, stating that established procedures are being followed to ensure prisoner safety.

Lord Timpson, the Prisons minister, acknowledged the seriousness of hunger strikes in prisons but assured that adequate measures are in place to monitor and care for the prisoners. He emphasized that decisions regarding remand and legal representation are under the purview of independent judges. The government maintains that ministerial intervention in ongoing legal cases would be unconstitutional.

As the situation continues to unfold, Kamran’s family remains anxious for updates on his well-being, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes his health and rights.
