“Widow Champions ‘Owain’s Law’ for Equal Brain Cancer Care”

A widow is advocating for legislative changes to eliminate disparities in care for brain cancer patients based on location. Ellie James is leading a movement after her husband Owain passed away in 2024 due to a glioblastoma, facing challenges in accessing tailored treatments because most of his tumor was not preserved after surgery.

Mrs. James is spearheading a push for patients to have the option to freeze and store their tissue post-surgery, allowing access to personalized therapies and genetic examinations. The 36-year-old from Caerphilly, South Wales, highlighted the inconsistent application of this practice within the NHS, resulting in unequal care depending on the patient’s location.

Calling for a modification in legislation, dubbed Owain’s Law, Mrs. James emphasizes the importance of patients being able to consent to the handling of their tissue. She believes that her husband might have survived if such a law had been in effect during his treatment.

The matter will be deliberated in a Westminster Hall debate soon. Mr. James, a father, received a brain cancer diagnosis in September 2022, with surgeons removing half of his 14cm tumor during the operation.

Following the surgery, the family fundraised for a personalized treatment for Mr. James. Mrs. James revealed that a crucial aspect they overlooked was the need for fresh-frozen tumor tissue to receive the vaccine necessary for the treatment.

Unfortunately, a significant portion of the tumor was rendered unusable due to improper preservation, limiting the number of vaccines that could be produced. Despite initial success with the vaccines post-surgery, the tumor reappeared nine months later, leading to Mr. James’ passing in June 2024.

Mrs. James expressed frustration over the lack of control and consent regarding the handling of her husband’s tissue, emphasizing the need for patients to have a say in how their tissue is managed for future treatments or research.

By advocating for Owain’s Law, she aims to empower patients with choices and control over their tissue, ensuring informed decisions about its storage and potential use in medical advancements.
