“Warning: Overusing Nasal Decongestant Sprays Can Worsen Congestion”

Struggling with nasal congestion? Beware of overusing nasal decongestant sprays for more than seven days, as it could worsen your condition. Recent findings reveal that a majority of pharmacists believe the public lacks awareness of the risks associated with prolonged spray usage.

While decongestant sprays provide immediate relief from stuffiness due to colds, allergies, or sinusitis, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) warns against exceeding a week of use to avoid rebound congestion. Rhinitis medicamentosa, a reversible condition caused by overuse, can exacerbate symptoms, leading individuals to rely on sprays for normal breathing.

Survey results from 300 pharmacists indicate that 59% feel the public is uninformed about this risk, with 74% suggesting clearer packaging labels to emphasize the seven-day limit. Nearly two-thirds of pharmacists (63%) have intervened when suspecting excessive use.

Professor Amira Guirguis, RPS’s chief scientist, emphasized the need for caution, stating that prolonged use of nasal decongestant sprays beyond seven days may worsen congestion. The RPS advocates for prominent warnings on packaging and increased awareness of the usage restriction. If congestion persists beyond a week, consulting a pharmacist for safe and effective alternatives is recommended.

Patients are urged to adhere to the instructions on nasal spray packaging and seek professional advice if symptoms persist. However, the consumer healthcare association PAGB expressed concern over sensational reporting on nasal decongestant spray usage, emphasizing the importance of responsible self-care and appropriate use of over-the-counter medicines during peak demand periods.

Manufacturers of over-the-counter nasal decongestant sprays provide comprehensive information to help individuals make informed decisions. Consumers are encouraged to consult pharmacists for guidance on suitable medication use. Pharmacists, as local healthcare experts, offer advice and support for self-treatable conditions.
