The United Kingdom has acquired a cutting-edge weapon system capable of firing eight rounds per minute while on the move at speeds of up to 100km/h.
Known as the RCH 155, this revolutionary mounted weapon is designed to be affixed to a BOXER armored vehicle, enabling it to engage targets up to 70km away. Through a £52 million agreement between the UK and Germany, the RCH 155 provides a significant enhancement to British military capabilities, drawing insights from recent conflicts such as those in Ukraine.
This innovative technology boasts an impressive operational range of 700km without the need for refueling, equivalent to a journey from Cornwall to Newcastle. Unlike traditional artillery systems that require stationary positioning to fire, the RCH 155 can engage targets while in motion, increasing its speed and making it a more elusive target for adversaries. With advanced automation, the weapon can be operated by just two crew members and has the capability to engage targets in any direction without repositioning.
Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, emphasized the significance of this new artillery system, stating that it allows the British Army to fire while on the move, learning valuable lessons from past conflicts like Ukraine. The ability to strike targets from a distance of 70km and swiftly maneuver away from enemy fire for subsequent engagements highlights the critical role of rapid deployment in modern warfare strategy.
Presently, soldiers are utilizing 14 Archer artillery systems as interim replacements for the AS90 guns provided to Ukraine. As part of the collaborative contract, the UK and Germany will exchange test data and resources to ensure both countries benefit from state-of-the-art equipment.

This partnership accelerates the delivery of top-tier artillery capabilities for the British Army in a more efficient and cost-effective manner than either nation could achieve independently.
