“UK Supports Greenland Autonomy Amid US Annexation Concerns”

The UK’s Foreign Secretary emphasized that the fate of Greenland lies solely in the hands of Greenlanders and Danes, with no interference from others. Concerns have risen regarding a possible annexation of Greenland by the US, following remarks made by President Donald Trump on the necessity of the territory for national security.

While speculation about the US interest in Greenland has been ongoing, recent comments by Trump have reignited the discussion. In a parliamentary address, the Foreign Secretary reiterated that Greenland is a part of the Danish Kingdom and emphasized the autonomy of Greenlanders and Danes in deciding its future.

Support for Denmark’s stance was echoed by UK officials, including Keir Starmer, who affirmed solidarity with Denmark’s rejection of any US claim over Greenland. The UK Prime Minister also reiterated the importance of respecting Denmark’s sovereignty in handling matters related to Greenland.

Former Chancellor Jeremy Hunt expressed concerns about the potential annexation of Greenland, warning of possible repercussions for the NATO alliance. He emphasized the significance of upholding international norms and preventing actions that could destabilize alliances such as NATO.

Addressing the situation in Venezuela, UK officials stressed the need for a peaceful transition to democracy in the country. While expressing support for democratic processes, UK leaders refrained from commenting on the legality of recent military actions in Venezuela, leaving it to the US to clarify their legal position.

Ensuring the safety of British nationals in Venezuela was highlighted as a top priority by Downing Street, with guidance provided for individuals on the ground to stay secure and review departure options. British nationals were advised to maintain valid travel documents and have contingency plans in place for emergencies.
