Yvette Cooper will affirm Britain’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine during her current trip to the conflict-ridden nation. As part of her inaugural journey as Foreign Secretary, Ms. Cooper has arrived in Kyiv to engage with President Zelenskyy, senior ministers, and Ukrainian citizens enduring Russia’s unlawful incursion.
The visit comes amidst rising tensions following the downing of Russian drones by Poland and Nato for breaching Polish airspace. Notably, Russia recently conducted its most extensive aerial attack on Ukraine since the conflict’s inception, targeting a key government edifice in Kyiv for the first time.
During her tour, Ms. Cooper will inspect the significantly damaged Cabinet of Ministers building and a residential structure destroyed by Russia, where she will meet affected families and children. Furthermore, she has pledged £142 million in UK aid to bolster Ukraine throughout the winter and beyond, with a focus on providing humanitarian aid to frontline communities, safeguarding vulnerable populations, and aiding those impacted by ongoing Russian aggression.
This substantial aid package includes initiatives to restore critical water and heating systems, support livelihoods, enhance job opportunities, and fortify Ukrainian resilience during the fourth winter of Russia’s illegal war. The UK will also allocate £40 million towards revitalizing Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which has been severely affected by Russian actions.
The funding commitment is part of a broader promise made earlier by Keir Starmer to support Ukraine in its struggle against Russia and assist civilians enduring Vladimir Putin’s ruthless offensive. Ms. Cooper emphasized the paramount importance of Ukraine’s security to the UK’s own security, underlining the enduring and intensified support the UK offers in the face of the long-term security risks posed by Russian aggression to Europe and the UK.
Additionally, as part of her itinerary, she will hold meetings with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, Foreign Minister Sybiha, and Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko to further reinforce bilateral ties and discuss ongoing collaborative efforts towards peace and stability in the region.
