“Travel Blogger’s Nightmare in Bocas del Toro”

An experienced travel blogger shared a disappointing experience after booking what she thought would be a perfect vacation in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Claudia Tavani, the creator of the travel blog My Adventures Across The World, was eager to explore Bocas del Toro, enticed by its portrayal as a tropical paradise in Central America by Lonely Planet.

However, Claudia’s expectations were shattered upon arrival. Instead of pristine, secluded beaches as described in the guide, she encountered heaps of garbage and rowdy tourists that made her feel like she had landed in a nightmare rather than a paradise. Despite finding solace in Red Frog Beach, the overall cleanliness of the beaches fell short of her standards, especially coming from the beautiful beaches of Sardinia.

Bocas del Toro, like the rest of Panama, presents a complex environment with various challenges, including high levels of gang violence, dangerous roads, and pickpocketing, according to the UK Foreign Office. The region faced a ‘state of urgency’ due to violent protests, which was lifted by the Panamanian government on June 29. However, a curfew for minors from 8pm to 5am remains in place.

Travel warnings highlight the potential disruptions caused by protests, advising travelers to plan alternative routes and stay informed. The area has witnessed targeted gang violence, particularly in tourist spots, mainly involving rival drug gangs.

One significant issue in Bocas del Toro is waste management, with a lack of public rubbish collection leading to residents resorting to dumping waste in rivers or burning it. Efforts to address this have included a plastic bag ban and the establishment of recycling facilities, with some individuals like Robert Bezeau constructing structures using plastic bottles to combat the waste problem.

Claudia’s firsthand experience in Bocas Town was marred by unclean streets, unsafe drinking water, and an overly touristy atmosphere dominated by drug activities. After enduring ten days in search of the paradise others had described, she eventually crossed into Costa Rica.

In contrast, Costa Rica exceeded Claudia’s expectations with its natural beauty and warm hospitality. Her month-long adventure involved exploring forests, hiking volcanoes, engaging in water activities, and immersing herself in nature at Corcovado National Park, creating lasting memories of tranquility and wildlife encounters.
