A recent study by Uswitch has revealed that the increased demand for streaming and internet browsing during the summer is leading to a bottleneck in broadband services. According to the comparison site, an estimated 9.4 million people in the UK are experiencing slower internet speeds due to the surge in online activity.
The survey conducted by Uswitch found that 32% of individuals encounter more frequent broadband issues as temperatures rise. The study also identified the cities most affected by this slowdown, with Edinburgh residents experiencing the greatest impact at 26%, followed by London and Plymouth at 23%, and Leeds and Sheffield.
Conversely, Cardiff and Bristol seem to be experiencing smoother broadband services compared to other cities. Uswitch’s broadband expert, Ernest Doku, recommends taking proactive measures to address slow speeds. He advises running a speed test to ensure that the internet speeds align with the package purchased, emphasizing that providers should guarantee a minimum speed for their services.
Doku further explains that for superfast broadband products, the guaranteed speed is determined by the line capacity directly into the premises. It is essential for consumers to be aware of the minimum speed promised by their broadband provider to ensure a satisfactory internet experience.
