A finalist from the popular TV show, Strictly Come Dancing, had a close call when he was involved in a car accident that could have been fatal. John Whaite, a winner of The Great British Bake Off who made it to the finals of the dance competition in 2021, shared on Instagram the details of the incident that could have ended tragically.
In a post on Wednesday, John recounted how he was hit by a car the previous night. He described the harrowing experience of being struck by the vehicle, damaging the car’s bonnet and windscreen before landing on the road. Fortunately, a passerby came to his aid, covering him with a coat and staying with him until help arrived.
Doctors informed John that his muscular build likely saved his life, stating that his 16-stone physique prevented what could have been a fatal outcome. Reflecting on the incident, John emphasized the importance of building strength and core muscles and advised against wearing dark clothing while crossing the road in low visibility.
Despite the scare, John reassured his followers that he underwent medical assessments and was deemed okay. With his signature humor, he quipped, “Still gay though.” He later clarified his use of the term “speeding,” explaining that it was a figurative expression to convey the sudden and shocking nature of the accident.
John made headlines for his participation in the 19th season of Strictly Come Dancing, where he teamed up with professional dancer Johannes Radebe to become the show’s first male same-sex couple. Their impressive performance led them to a second-place finish, narrowly missing out on the top spot to Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice.
Prior to his dancing stint, John gained fame on The Great British Bake Off in 2012, winning the competition despite facing challenges like a significant finger injury during the show’s sixth episode.
