Samsung, known for its top-tier phones, is gearing up for a significant upgrade set to launch soon, potentially overshadowing its current flagship lineup.
The latest Galaxy S25 and S25 Ultra models are currently equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, a premium chip commonly found in high-end Android devices from various manufacturers like OnePlus, Sony, and Honor.
After the debut of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip last year, Qualcomm is now poised to unveil its successor at a major event in Hawaii. The upcoming processor, named Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, is expected to take center stage.
While specific details about the new processor are yet to be officially disclosed, Qualcomm has confirmed its imminent release. According to Don McGuire, Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer, the jump to Gen 5 is a strategic move to reinforce the platform’s leadership position and simplify the product roadmap for consumers.
The Snapdragon 8 series initially started with the Gen 1 chip in 2021, followed by Gen 2 in 2022 and Gen 3 in 2023. However, the introduction of the Snapdragon 8 Elite last year deviated from the numbering convention, skipping Gen 4. Now, with the Gen 5 branding, Qualcomm aims to align with the series’ fifth generation.
Despite the complexities of the naming convention, one thing is certain – the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is expected to deliver exceptional performance. Full details will be unveiled soon, including information on which smartphones will feature this advanced processor.
Qualcomm emphasized that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of premium-tier processors. By adhering to established naming principles focused on performance, timing, and product fit, Qualcomm aims to provide clarity and confidence to consumers and partners navigating its product roadmap.
