The rising trend of people opting for unofficial providers over official ones has raised concerns for companies like Sky. Sky’s chief operating officer, Nick Herm, highlighted the prevalence of jail-broken Fire Sticks in the market, emphasizing how individuals can easily access pirated services through these devices.
Amazon, the manufacturer of Fire TV Sticks, distances itself from any responsibility, as it only sells the devices with official apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video pre-installed. However, the problem lies in the capability of side-loading unofficial applications that facilitate the installation of free streaming software.
In response to these challenges, Amazon has unveiled the new Fire TV Stick 4K Select, a more cost-effective option that offers enhanced visuals in 4K resolution. Notably, this new device operates on the Vega platform instead of Amazon’s Fire OS, and it strictly limits app installations to approved software from Amazon’s marketplace.
This restriction means that unauthorized applications will be ineffective on the new Fire TV Stick, potentially curbing illegal streaming activities on these devices. While existing Fire TV Sticks may still run dodgy apps, this development could signal a shift in the landscape of streaming on such devices in the future. Amazon has emphasized that only apps from the Amazon Appstore on Fire TV are eligible for download, enhancing security measures on the platform.
