Persistent heartburn should not be overlooked, as it could indicate a more serious health issue, according to a GP. While occasional heartburn can be managed with over-the-counter treatments, ongoing symptoms may require medical attention. Dr. Dan Baumgardt, a Bristol-based GP and lecturer at the University of Bristol, emphasizes the importance of addressing persistent indigestion.
In a published piece, Dr. Baumgardt highlights that heartburn might be a sign of acid reflux or, in rare cases, cancer. He points out that while many benign conditions can be the root cause of heartburn, prolonged symptoms may suggest an underlying serious condition, potentially including cancer.
Indigestion, medically known as dyspepsia, is characterized by discomfort accompanied by bloating, burping, nausea, and a sense of fullness. Acid reflux, where stomach acid flows back up the esophagus, can lead to a bitter taste in the mouth.
Various factors such as coffee, alcohol, spicy foods, smoking, pregnancy, large meals, and certain medications like antidepressants and ibuprofen can trigger indigestion symptoms. Persistent indigestion should raise concerns, especially if accompanied by unexplained weight loss, upper abdominal pain, or cardiac chest pain, particularly for individuals over 50 who have a higher risk of cancer.
Additional warning signs to watch for include jaundice, nausea, vomiting, and changes in bowel habits. Dr. Baumgardt advises against relying solely on over-the-counter remedies for severe or persistent indigestion and urges individuals to consult a healthcare provider if symptoms persist or worsen. Seeking medical advice is crucial in case of recurrent or severe problems, or if there are any other alarming changes.
