“Parents Seek Funds for Cancer-Stricken Son’s Treatment”

The parents of a six-year-old boy who is battling cancer for the third time are seeking funds for international treatment to improve his chances. Tommy Verbickas, residing in Sale, Greater Manchester, was diagnosed with Wilms tumor at the age of two in February 2022, following the discovery of a 2.3kg mass on his left kidney.

Despite undergoing chemotherapy, surgery, and various hospital visits, Tommy celebrated the end of his initial treatment in November 2022. However, he has experienced two relapses since then, with his parents being informed that his likelihood of cure is now low.

Facing limited local treatment options, the family is fundraising for access to “clinical trials and innovative therapies” not offered by the NHS to enhance Tommy’s chances of recovery.

Rebecca, a 37-year-old customer service worker, shared her emotional journey, expressing her admiration for Tommy’s resilience and determination. She described Tommy as a lively, mischievous boy who loves football, dancing, and playing with his siblings.

Rebecca recounted the challenges they faced before Tommy’s first diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of early detection. Despite initial dismissals by healthcare professionals, they eventually discovered the tumor in Tommy’s kidney.

After multiple rounds of treatment and surgeries, Tommy showed remarkable progress but unfortunately faced a recurrence of cancer in his lungs during a routine check-up in September 2023.

Amidst ongoing treatments, including intense chemotherapy and upcoming high-dose sessions, Rebecca highlighted the financial strain of seeking further treatments not covered by the NHS. To support Tommy’s fight, they have initiated a JustGiving campaign aiming to raise £300,000 for potential overseas treatments.

Rebecca expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received and emphasized the significance of each donation in providing Tommy with hope for a brighter future. She emphasized the importance of cherishing every moment and encouraged other parents to advocate for their children’s health.

Tommy’s inspiring journey has garnered widespread attention, with JustGiving acknowledging his courage and resilience. The family’s dedication to sharing their story and exploring all treatment avenues has resonated with many, offering hope and awareness to a larger audience.
