Despite her persistent concerns, it wasn’t until she spotted a significant swelling in her neck post-childbirth that she demanded answers.
After days of uncertainty, she was shocked to learn of her cancer diagnosis immediately following a previous assurance of good health. The 30-year-old mother of two expressed her initial devastation and fear upon receiving the news, especially considering the impact on her young children. Living in Adelaide, Australia, Tameika had sensed an underlying health issue for years, noticing a visible change in her appearance with the lump gradually increasing in size.
Her health concerns during pregnancy in 2019 led to the discovery of an underactive thyroid, which improved with medication but left her with weight gain upon cessation. Despite repeated reassurances of normal blood results, it wasn’t until postpartum when the swelling in her thyroid became apparent, prompting further investigations.
A series of medical visits culminated in the detection of cancer in Tameika’s neck, highlighting a frustrating journey of misdiagnoses and overlooked symptoms. Subsequent tests revealed thyroid cancer and the presence of Hashimoto’s disease, a condition attacking the thyroid gland. Following surgeries and treatments, including radioactive iodine therapy, Tameika continues to battle the disease with ongoing medical interventions.
