Helmut Marko has disclosed that Max Verstappen expressed sadness upon learning about the veteran Austrian’s upcoming departure from Red Bull. Marko also stated that the four-time Formula 1 World champion would leave the team if they fail to maintain a conducive environment for his success.
Marko, aged 82, will be stepping down at the end of the year after serving as an adviser to the team for two decades, where he was instrumental in the development of their junior driver program. Marko was responsible for bringing Verstappen into the Red Bull family, outbidding Mercedes for the young talent.
The bond between Marko and Verstappen was notably strong. Verstappen publicly supported Marko during internal conflicts at Red Bull, indicating that he might consider departing if Marko was no longer with the team, referring to him as a significant influence in his life.
In an interview with Austrian publication Kleine Zeitung, Marko shared Verstappen’s reaction to his decision to leave, mentioning fond memories of their time together and Verstappen’s remarkable achievements in Formula 1.
Marko dismissed any concerns about Verstappen leaving Red Bull, confirming that the Dutch driver respects his choice. However, Marko emphasized that maintaining a harmonious environment is crucial for Verstappen’s continued partnership with Red Bull.
Red Bull GmbH officially announced Marko’s departure as a voluntary decision. Nonetheless, reports suggest that tensions between Marko and Red Bull’s leadership had been escalating, citing incidents involving public remarks and unauthorized signings within the team.
Marko denied these claims, attributing them to baseless rumors circulated by certain media outlets. He emphasized his commitment to the team and dismissed the allegations.
