Luke Littler’s performance in the first round of the 2025-26 PDC World Championship against Darius Labanauskas has earned him accolades. The 18-year-old emerged victorious with a 3-0 win at Alexandra Palace, although the match was a challenging one for the reigning champion. Labanauskas, ranked 95th globally, put up a strong fight, starting with a 130 checkout on the bull in the first leg.
Despite Labanauskas pushing both of the first two sets to deciding legs, Littler managed to secure the win, setting up a second-round encounter with either David Davies from Wales or Mario Vandenbogaerde from Belgium.
Reflecting on his performance, Littler expressed satisfaction with the victory, acknowledging the nerves he felt initially but crediting his ability to settle into the game as it progressed. He emphasized the importance of winning the first set against the darts, highlighting the competitive nature of the tournament’s opening round.
Commenting on Littler’s match, Sky pundit Mark Webster commended the young player’s resilience in overcoming the challenges posed by Labanauskas. Despite facing a tough test, Littler displayed composure and determination, ultimately securing the win.
Looking ahead, Littler now has a 10-day break before the next stage. As the previous Sid Waddell Trophy winner, he aims to defend his title in the upcoming final. The tournament continues with the first round scheduled to conclude the following week, leading up to the final on January 3, 2025.
In other matches on the opening night, former champion Michael Smith defeated Women’s World Matchplay winner Lisa Ashton 3-0, with Smith admitting to initial nerves but finding his rhythm after claiming the first set.
