“Innovative AI Scanners Detect Stolen Items in Undergarments”

Next is currently trialing innovative AI scanners capable of detecting stolen items concealed in undergarments such as bras and underwear. This cutting-edge technology operates by identifying changes in body heat and can also detect hidden weapons, explosives, cash, and drugs.

The “Thruvision Passive Terahertz Screening System,” which has undergone testing at Next UK warehouses and distribution centers, may soon be implemented in retail stores. Steve Teatum, Head of Group Loss Prevention at Next, discussed the system on a recent episode of the Retail Crime Uncovered podcast.

Teatum explained how the Thruvision system has helped identify individuals attempting to steal by concealing items in personal areas of their body, a tactic known as ‘Mules.’ The advanced technology has significantly improved detection rates, making it challenging for traditional security screening methods to identify concealed items effectively.

Despite ongoing attempts at theft, the adoption of this technology has proven highly effective in preventing such incidents. This initiative comes as shoplifting rates in England and Wales have surged to their highest levels in over two decades, with over 530,000 offenses recorded in the year ending March.

In a similar move to combat theft, Home Bargains has installed AI cameras at self-checkouts to detect unscanned items. These cameras, developed in partnership with tech firms SAI and Everseen, aim to identify “misscans” and “skip scans” that occur at self-checkout points. Home Bargains’ operations director praised the technology’s effectiveness over traditional security measures.

The implementation of AI-driven solutions in retail environments is part of a broader effort to curb rising incidents of retail crime. Home Bargains has also introduced a confidential hotline for customers to report shoplifting and other criminal activities at their stores.
