Tourists visiting Iceland are resorting to packing food in their suitcases due to the high cost of food in the country. Despite its breathtaking natural beauty, including Northern Lights displays and scenic landscapes, Iceland is known for its expensive food prices.
A traveler recently documented their supermarket visit in Iceland, revealing the exorbitant costs of everyday items. Items like strawberries, baguettes, and cheese sandwiches were priced significantly higher compared to what one would find in an English supermarket.
For instance, a small pack of strawberries cost around £4.75, while a baguette was priced at approximately £6.32 and a cheese sandwich at £4.45. Other items like olive oil, instant noodles, Serrano ham, and traditional Icelandic delicacies were also notably expensive.
According to a report by The Drinks Business, Iceland ranks as the most expensive European country to purchase wine, with mid-range wines averaging around £18.30, significantly higher than the European average of about £7.17.
Despite the steep food prices, some individuals attribute the high costs to the country’s higher salaries. While the expenses may add up during a visit to Iceland, budgeting for food can still make the trip worthwhile, given the country’s unique attractions and experiences.
