An easyJet passenger recently shared her experience of challenging the airline’s fine for an oversized bag. Louise Machin was surprised when faced with a €58 (£51) fee at Chania Airport in Crete, despite checking her bag’s size meticulously beforehand. After contacting the bag manufacturer to confirm compliance, easyJet refunded the fee.
Machin’s case is not unique, as per consumer group Which?, citing issues with airport bag sizers leading to wrongful fines. Passengers are advised to double-check bag dimensions due to discrepancies in sizing tools at various airports.
On a trip to Crete, Machin faced the fine upon her return despite no issues on her outbound journey. Despite proving compliance, ground staff insisted on payment, causing her to pay to board the flight. Upon contacting the bag manufacturer, Cabin Max verified the bag’s conformity with easyJet’s rules, leading to a refund from the airline.
Which? notes similar incidents with other airlines penalizing passengers for minor size discrepancies. Airlines are urged to review fines if passengers believe they were wrongly charged. Despite easyJet claiming no sizer faults at Chania Airport, they refunded Machin and emphasized standardized sizer procedures.
In response, easyJet stated that their bag sizers meet cabin bag guidelines and address sizer damage promptly. They apologize for Machin’s experience and aim to resolve customer feedback on a case-by-case basis.
