A young woman, Bella Bayliss, shared her experience of being misdiagnosed by doctors who dismissed her symptoms of bloating and pain as typical “women’s problems” when, in fact, they were signs of a rare cancer called Gastro-Intestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST). Bella, aged 25 from Gloucester, urged people to be aware of their bodies and seek proper medical attention.
Despite her initial misdiagnosis, Bella persisted and insisted on an endoscopy, which revealed a 6cm tumor in her stomach, leading to her diagnosis of GIST. She underwent surgery to remove the cancer and a portion of her stomach. However, almost six years later, the cancer returned, requiring further surgery.
Bella expressed her shock and disappointment at the cancer’s recurrence, stating that the impact on her life was profound. She highlighted the challenges she faces post-surgery, including difficulty eating certain foods and a loss of confidence due to scarring.
Reflecting on her misdiagnosis in 2019, Bella recalled feeling breathless, fatigued, and experiencing persistent stomach pains, which were dismissed by doctors at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Eventually, an endoscopy revealed the presence of the tumor.
GIST is a rare type of cancer that develops in the digestive system, predominantly in the stomach. Bella’s experience prompted the NHS to emphasize the importance of thorough investigation in cases like hers, where early detection is crucial.
A spokesperson from the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust expressed regret over Bella’s experience and acknowledged the complexity of her condition. They emphasized the need for heightened clinical suspicion in diagnosing rare conditions like GIST.
