“Construction Crane Tragedy Claims 29 Lives in Thailand”

A tragic incident occurred in north-eastern Thailand when a construction crane fell onto a passenger train, resulting in a fiery derailment that claimed the lives of at least 29 individuals. The derailment, part of a high-speed rail project connecting China and south-east Asia, caused injuries to 64 people, with ongoing rescue operations and first aid being provided.

The crane, used for constructing an elevated railway segment, collapsed as the train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. The scene depicted plumes of smoke and debris, with rescue workers navigating the overturned train carriages. The train, carrying 195 passengers, suffered extensive damage, particularly affecting the last two carriages.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has demanded accountability for the incident, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into potential negligence. The tragedy has raised concerns about construction safety and adherence to protocols. Reports indicate a one-year-old as the youngest injured, among over 80 individuals wounded in the accident.

Authorities are actively managing the aftermath, with efforts to free trapped passengers from the wreckage using hydraulic cutters. The incident, now under control, has prompted a comprehensive inquiry into the causes behind the catastrophic crane collapse. The total investment in the rail project exceeds 520 billion baht, aligning with regional connectivity plans under the Belt and Road Initiative.
