“Championship Contenders Benched in Abu Dhabi FP1”

Oscar Piastri faces a setback in his bid for the Formula 1 championship this weekend as he, along with eight other drivers, will miss the first practice session at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix due to a regulation introduced in 2025.

The title showdown at the Yas Marina Circuit will feature Piastri, Lando Norris, and Max Verstappen contending for the top honors of the season. While a podium finish for Norris could secure him the championship, any errors on his part could provide opportunities for his rivals.

With the championship at stake in Abu Dhabi, it is crucial for drivers to maximize their practice time. However, nearly half of the grid will be absent from the first hour of practice due to a rule mandating teams to offer chances for rookie drivers.

Throughout the season, each team must include a rookie driver in two free practice sessions per car, totaling four sessions per team. As a result, several teams still need to meet their rookie session requirements, leading to the presence of several new faces in FP1 this weekend.

Piastri will be among those substituted, with Pato O’Ward taking his McLaren for the session. Additionally, Lewis Hamilton will not participate, as Ferrari has announced that Arthur Leclerc will step in for him.

Several other drivers will also be replaced for FP1, including Arvid Lindblad, Ayumu Iwasa, and Ryo Hirakawa taking over for their respective teammates. Meanwhile, Alex Albon will make way for Luke Browning at Williams, and Aston Martin will field Cian Shields and Jak Crawford in place of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

Mercedes and Sauber have fulfilled their rookie practice session requirements, allowing their drivers to participate as usual. The final weekend in Abu Dhabi is a prime opportunity for rookie sessions, offering valuable experience for young drivers aiming for full-time positions.

Rookie sessions are pivotal for the development of emerging talents in Formula 1, with many drivers securing permanent seats based on their performance in these sessions. Abu Dhabi, with its unique conditions compared to qualifying and race day, provides an ideal setting for showcasing young talent and shaping the future of the sport.
