“BT’s Openreach Mandates Transition to Digital Voice Services”

The traditional landline phone system is gradually being phased out in favor of modern digital calling methods that utilize the internet rather than traditional copper wires. This shift has already seen millions of households transition to broadband technology, with an additional 137 locations now making the switch from aging copper cables.

The announcement of this update comes from BT’s Openreach service, mandating that households must adopt digital voice services when signing up for new broadband plans or changing providers. Referred to as the “Stop Sell” alert, this directive is issued to Internet Service Providers once a significant number of homes near a broadband exchange gain access to ultrafast Full Fibre connectivity.

Under the “Stop Sell” policy, customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or modify their broadband or phone services will be required to opt for digital services over broadband connections. However, households without Full Fibre infrastructure in their vicinity can continue using copper lines until fiber optic cables are installed in their area.

The transition to Digital Voice aims to enhance calling experiences for users, offering features like Multi Call, three-way conference calling, and call diversion to mobile phones, which were not available on traditional landlines. Improved call quality is also a highlight of Digital Voice, contingent on having a compatible Digital Home phone.

BT emphasizes the importance of this update in meeting future communication demands, highlighting the necessity of adapting to newer technologies. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact on elderly and vulnerable individuals without broadband access, as well as potential phone service disruptions during broadband outages. Regulatory bodies like Ofcom are closely monitoring these issues and are prepared to take action against providers failing to meet their obligations.

James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Manager, stated that the stop sell initiative is crucial for modernizing the UK’s communication infrastructure and aligning with future requirements. The shift towards Full Fibre technology is seen as a strategic move to phase out outdated copper networks in favor of more advanced and reliable digital solutions, facilitating the transition to a digital-centric society.

This transformation towards digital technologies is seen as essential for keeping up with the evolving communication landscape, with Openreach leading the way in rolling out advanced Full Fibre networks across the UK.
