“British Submarine Confronts Russian Spy Ship Yantar”

A recent declassified photograph reveals a British submarine engaging with the Russian spy vessel Yantar. This development follows Defense Secretary John Healey’s disclosure in November regarding the Yantar’s provocative actions, including shining lasers at RAF pilots and lingering near UK waters. Healey strongly criticized Russia for these actions, emphasizing the Yantar’s role in intelligence gathering and mapping undersea cables.

In a separate incident in November 2024, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) released an image showing a Royal Navy submarine and helicopter confronting the Russian ship. During this period, RAF maritime patrol aircraft, along with HMS Cattistock, HMS Tyne, and RFA Proteus, were deployed to monitor the Yantar’s movements closely.

Addressing Members of Parliament in January, Healey mentioned authorizing a Royal Navy submarine to surface near the Yantar as a deterrent measure, ensuring covert monitoring of the vessel’s activities. Consequently, the Yantar left UK waters promptly and headed towards the Mediterranean.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson reiterated the Defense Secretary’s firm stance towards President Putin, emphasizing vigilance and readiness to take robust actions to safeguard the country against potential threats. The spokesperson highlighted the ongoing efforts to counter Russian activities, including mapping undersea infrastructure, imposing sanctions, monitoring Russian vessels near UK waters, and enhancing anti-submarine technology.

Through initiatives like the Atlantic Bastion program, the UK is spearheading the development of hybrid naval capabilities, integrating advanced technologies to protect critical undersea assets from evolving threats.

Healey, in a press conference last November, described the Yantar as a symbol of the increasing Russian threat. He emphasized the UK’s awareness of the Yantar’s activities and the government’s preparedness to respond effectively. The Russian embassy in London, however, criticized the UK government’s actions as “Russophobic” and accused them of stoking militaristic tensions.

Overall, the UK remains vigilant against Russian incursions and is actively implementing measures to safeguard national security and critical infrastructure.
