“Android Users Beware: BadBox Malware Infects 10M Devices”

A recent alert has been issued to Android users regarding a significant threat called BadBox malware. This malware has infected millions of devices, posing risks of generating revenue for cybercriminals through adware and potential exposure to ransomware that demands payment to prevent data leakage.

Approximately 10 million devices, including tablets, projectors, and streaming boxes, have reportedly been affected by BadBox 2.0. These devices, often manufactured in China, are sold at low prices but come pre-loaded with the malicious software.

To combat this illegal activity and protect consumers, Google has taken legal action against those responsible for creating and selling these compromised devices. Google highlighted the scale of the threat, naming the BadBox 2.0 botnet as the largest known botnet affecting internet-connected TV devices, with the potential to escalate to more severe cybercrimes like ransomware and DDoS attacks.

In addition to Google’s warning, the FBI has advised consumers to be vigilant and disconnect any suspicious devices from their networks. Specific devices known to have been affected include Android TV boxes with model numbers X88 Pro 10, T95, MXQ Pro, and QPLOVE Q9.

Consumers are urged to verify if their devices are Google Play Protect-certified, especially if purchased from unofficial sources. It is recommended to avoid purchasing off-brand gadgets from unknown manufacturers, as they may be vulnerable to BadBox 2.0 attacks. Furthermore, users should exercise caution when downloading apps and only use official software sources to minimize the risk of malware infiltration.
