Microsoft Office Users Unhappy with “Microsoft 365 Copilot” Rename

Users of Microsoft Office have expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s recent rebranding of its popular software suite. This suite, initially launched in 1990 by Bill Gates’ global corporation, comprises Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote and boasts a massive user base of 400 million worldwide.

Recently, users were surprised by a dialog box announcing the name change. It now welcomes users to the “Microsoft 365 Copilot app,” a platform that enables creating, sharing, and collaborating across various applications, including Copilot.

Introduced in 2023 as a successor to Cortana, Copilot is an AI chatbot designed to enhance user productivity by automating tasks and content generation.

In response to the rebranding, software creator Peter Dedene criticized the move, lamenting the transformation of familiar names like MS Office and Microsoft 365 into “Microsoft 365 Copilot.”

Another individual expressed discontent, comparing the renaming to Twitter being rebranded as “X” and demanding a discussion with the decision-maker behind the change.

Critics argue that the brand’s identity underwent significant damage in 2020 when Office was rebranded as Microsoft 365, separate from the recent AI integration.

Despite the backlash, Microsoft clarified that the renaming to Microsoft 365 Copilot aims to highlight the integration of Copilot within the productivity suite, enhancing user experiences for work, education, and personal tasks.

Gareth Oystryk, Senior Director of Marketing at Microsoft 365, clarified that only the Office “hub” app transitioned to Microsoft 365 in 2022 and was later updated to Microsoft 365 Copilot in 2025 to emphasize its role in consolidating Copilot and Microsoft 365 features.

Microsoft advised existing users to connect to the internet and restart the Microsoft 365 Copilot app to see the changes reflected on different platforms.
