Russia has once again issued a threat towards Britain, this time targeting Sir Keir Starmer as well. Dmitry Rogozin, a key figure in Vladimir Putin’s circle, criticized Starmer as “illiterate and a fool” for proposing to station British troops in Ukraine under a peace agreement. Rogozin suggested that this move could make the UK vulnerable to missile attacks from Russia.
Rogozin, a former deputy premier and head of the Russian space agency, emphasized that historical powers like England, France, and Turkey never entertained such ideas even after Russia’s defeat in the Crimean War of 1853-1856. Despite belittling Starmer, Rogozin warned of severe consequences for the UK if they proceed with such plans.
In response, Starmer announced plans for the UK and France to establish military bases in Ukraine, creating secure facilities for weapons and equipment to assist Kyiv in its defense efforts. This initiative follows a joint declaration signed by the UK Prime Minister, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris to deploy British and French troops post-ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Putin addressed his troops, claiming that their actions in Ukraine were sanctioned by God. He made these remarks during an Orthodox Christmas service, surrounded by military intelligence officials and their families. Putin’s rhetoric framed the conflict as a divine mission, emphasizing the soldiers’ role in defending and saving the homeland.
Putin’s speech was accompanied by attacks on Ukraine, resulting in casualties, including children. By portraying Russian soldiers as carrying out a sacred duty, Putin sought to justify the military actions through religious language. The Russian leader’s presence at the service with high-ranking military officials indicated his support for covert operations, amidst concerns of escalating Russian activities across Europe.
European security services have raised alarms over increased covert operations by Russia, with GRU operatives allegedly involved in sabotage activities. A specialized GRU unit, known as the “Department of Special Tasks,” has been implicated in plotting sabotage and assassination missions in Europe. Putin’s blessings to these operatives reflect a concerning trend of Russian aggression in the region.
