“Pub Industry Pushes Back Against UK Drink-Drive Limit Cut”

Ministers are encountering resistance from the pub industry regarding their proposal to decrease the drink-drive limit in a bid to enhance road safety.

As part of a significant road safety initiative, England and Wales are contemplating reducing the current drink-drive limit from 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath to 22 micrograms, aligning it with Scotland’s limit implemented in 2014. Presently, England and Wales hold the highest limit in Europe, alongside Malta.

The potential reduction in the limit could mean that even a single pint could push certain individuals over the threshold. Various factors such as age, weight, and gender play a role in determining how much alcohol a person can consume before reaching the limit.

Concerns have been raised by representatives of rural pubs regarding the potential impact of the proposed change on the sector. However, government officials have defended the plan, emphasizing the need to prevent further tragic incidents caused by drink-driving. They pointed out that Scotland’s experience with a lower drink-drive limit did not negatively affect the pubs industry.

Transport minister Ms. Greenwood emphasized the importance of not drinking and driving, urging individuals to leave their cars at home if they intend to consume alcohol. The decision to lower the drink-drive limit is influenced by the significant number of fatalities resulting from drink-driving incidents.

In 2024, 1,633 people lost their lives on Britain’s roads, with nearly 28,000 sustaining serious injuries in traffic accidents. Despite a notable decline in road incidents between 2000 and 2010, the number of fatalities related to drink-driving has surged over the past decade, reaching a 13-year peak in 2022.

Critics of the plan, including Reform leader Nigel Farage, argue that the proposal could have detrimental effects on country pubs across the UK. Conversely, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) highlighted the sector’s commitment to promoting responsible drinking and supporting drink-drive campaigns, citing a reduction in alcohol-related driving accidents based on recent government data.

The road safety strategy, described as a major overhaul in many years, also includes provisions for mandatory installation of “alcolocks” in vehicles of convicted drink-drivers, as well as granting authorities the power to suspend driving licenses for individuals suspected of drink or drug-driving offenses. An alcohol interlock, or ‘alcolock,’ is a breathalyser device that prevents a driver from operating a vehicle if they have exceeded a specified alcohol limit.

The proposal to reduce the drink-drive limit is part of the government’s efforts to address the escalating number of drink-driving-related fatalities and enhance road safety.
