“Nurse Charged with Distributing Fake Ozempic Injections”

A nurse from Chicago, Sharon Charitine Sackman, has been charged in federal court for allegedly providing patients with fake Ozempic injections. Prosecutors claim that Sackman distributed misbranded and counterfeit drugs to three individuals in 2023, falsely presenting them as Ozempic, a medication commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes but not officially for weight loss.

The scarcity of Ozempic in the market has led to an increase in illegal alternatives being sold outside approved medical channels. Exploiting this demand, Sackman allegedly supplied patients with drugs labeled as Ozempic without proper authorization to prescribe, dispense, or sell the medication.

Although registered as a nurse, Sackman was not licensed to administer the drug in the manner she allegedly did, posing potential health risks to patients who believed they were receiving legitimate treatment. Sackman, now residing in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, pleaded not guilty to one count of distributing misbranded drugs and three counts of dispensing counterfeit drugs during her court appearance in Chicago this week.

Each count carries a potential sentence of up to one year in prison if she is convicted. The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized that the charges are allegations, and Sackman is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.

A hearing before Judge Laura K. McNally is scheduled for February 3, as reported by CBS News. The trend of using medications for rapid weight loss transformations, even among celebrities, has raised concerns. Aesthetic specialist Roy Cowley warned about the negative consequences of quick-fix weight loss methods, highlighting the risk of a gaunt appearance and other undesirable effects.

He cautioned that rapid weight loss, often facilitated by products like Ozempic, could lead to sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, sagging skin, and prominent wrinkles. The aftermath of drastic weight loss, especially when achieved rapidly, may result in skin issues that do not easily recover.
