Christian Turner Named UK Ambassador to US

Keir Starmer has revealed his selection to succeed Peter Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador to the United States. Christian Turner, a seasoned diplomat and former Political Director at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO), has been appointed as the next representative in Washington DC, as confirmed by the government. In May, the government had initially designated Dr. Turner as the UK’s Ambassador to the United Nations. However, a recent announcement from No10 disclosed that he has been reassigned from New York to Washington DC to assume the role of Britain’s next liaison with the US administration.

This decision follows the dismissal of Lord Mandelson as Ambassador to Washington due to revelations regarding his association with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Dr. Turner, a career diplomat, previously served as the British High Commissioner to Pakistan from December 2019 to January 2023. Prior to this role, he held positions as an international affairs advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor during Theresa May’s tenure as Prime Minister.

Keir Starmer expressed his satisfaction with Christian Turner’s appointment as the British Ambassador to the United States, emphasizing the special relationship between the UK and the US. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper also commended Turner’s diplomatic expertise and expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with him to maintain the crucial special relationship between the two nations. Dr. Turner conveyed his honor at being selected for the role, highlighting the historic partnership, shared values, security interests, and economic connections between the UK and the USA. He looks forward to working with President Trump’s administration, Congress, business leaders, and society to reinforce this bond in the coming years.
