“Warning: UK Adults Urged to Seek Advice Before Using Paracetamol”

Paracetamol, a commonly used medication in the UK, is popular for its pain-relieving and fever-reducing properties. Approximately 200 million packs of this painkiller are sold without prescription in the UK annually.

Despite its widespread use, it is important to note that paracetamol may not be suitable for everyone. Certain individuals, constituting about one-quarter of UK adults, are advised to seek medical advice before using this medication to prevent potential adverse effects.

The NHS recommends that individuals consuming more than the recommended maximum of 14 alcohol units per week should consult a healthcare professional before taking paracetamol. This caution is due to both paracetamol and alcohol being metabolized by the liver, which can strain the liver when both substances are combined.

Recent data indicates that around 25% of UK adults exceed the 14-unit alcohol consumption threshold per week. Other groups advised to seek medical guidance before using paracetamol include individuals with liver or kidney issues, those taking specific medications, and individuals with a history of allergic reactions to paracetamol or other drugs.

For individuals weighing less than 50kg (eight stone), a lower paracetamol dosage may be necessary. Unless advised otherwise by a healthcare provider, adults can take two 500mg tablets, up to four times within a 24-hour period.

It is recommended to wait at least four hours between doses, with a maximum of eight 500mg tablets in 24 hours. If using 1g tablets, the maximum dose is four tablets within 24 hours.

In case of an overdose of paracetamol, even if there are no immediate symptoms, individuals are advised to contact 111 for guidance. The NHS advises individuals not to drive themselves to the hospital in such instances and to bring along the paracetamol packaging, any remaining tablets, and details of other medications being taken.
