“Electoral Commission Clears Farage of Election Spending Violations”

The Electoral Commission has officially stated that Nigel Farage’s spending during the general election will not be subject to investigation, despite calls from the Labour Party. Allegations were made regarding potential overspending by the Reform UK leader in his constituency, raising concerns about a possible breach of electoral regulations.

Accusations were directed at Mr. Farage’s campaign for allegedly misreporting election expenses during his Clacton MP bid in the recent General Election, where he finally secured the seat after multiple unsuccessful attempts in the past.

Richard Everett, a former Reform councillor and member of Mr. Farage’s campaign team, claimed that the campaign failed to disclose spending on various items such as leaflets, banners, utility bills, and office refurbishment in Clacton, potentially exceeding the expenditure limit for the area. However, the Electoral Commission clarified that they did not find any undisclosed spending by Reform at the national level.

Earlier, Essex Police had been assessing a report on alleged misreported expenditure by a political party but could not proceed due to a time limitation on investigations. In a letter to Reform UK, the Electoral Commission stated that no credible evidence of electoral law offenses was identified, leading them to close the inquiry without further action.

A spokesperson for the Electoral Commission addressed concerns raised by Labour’s Anna Turley MP regarding Reform UK’s 2024 general election spending, confirming that no expenses related to Mr. Farage’s campaign in Clacton required declaration in Reform UK’s national expenditure.

Peter Harris, Mr. Farage’s election agent in Clacton, dismissed the complaint as politically motivated and emphasized that the process had been rigorously reviewed and dismissed conclusively. Reform UK had previously denied any wrongdoing in election spending and discredited Mr. Everett as a disgruntled former councillor expelled from the party.
