Amid hopes of moving past contentious disputes, organizers of Your Party aimed for a unifying tone at their inaugural conference. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn urged unity, emphasizing the need to come together in his address to over 2,000 delegates.
Despite rumors of disruptions, the event proceeded without major incident, a relief for a party plagued by internal conflicts since its establishment. Issues such as donation disputes, membership launch setbacks, and the departure of two independent MPs have inadvertently benefited rival parties like the Greens.
Corbyn, returning to the same stage he graced as Labour leader in 2018, cautioned against division, stressing the importance of seizing the moment to champion real socialism and social justice tirelessly.
However, moments of discord arose when former Labour MP Zarah Sultana, a key figure in the party’s inception, criticized recent expulsions and the exclusion of supporters from the conference. She emphasized a commitment to inclusivity and denounced what she termed a “witch hunt” culture within the party.
Following initial disruptions, Sultana eventually delivered her keynote speech, acknowledging shortcomings in the party’s early stages and expressing regret for any missteps. Despite internal criticisms, the party members voted to adopt a new leadership structure, opting for a committee of ordinary members to lead until late 2027, diverging from the traditional single leadership model favored by Corbyn.
Concluding the conference, Corbyn revealed the official name chosen by the members – “Your Party.” Encouraging unity and collaboration in embracing the party’s ethos and principles, he emphasized the significance of their actions for the broader population.
As Your Party navigates uncharted waters with its unique leadership model, the call for unity resonates as delegates forge ahead, potentially shaping the political landscape in unforeseen ways.
