“Musical Duo Faces $200K Bill After US Baby Birth”

A pair faced a hefty $200,000 medical charge following the premature birth of their baby while in the US. Musical duo Issy Ferris and Archie Sylvester traveled to Nashville for a show when Issy was 33 weeks pregnant.

During the penultimate show of their tour, Issy fell ill, mistaking it for severe food poisoning. Unbeknownst to her, she was dealing with pre-eclampsia, a risky pregnancy complication that affects women in the later stages of pregnancy.

The situation led to an emergency C-section for their baby boy, resulting in a substantial $200,000 bill initially rejected by their travel insurance. It took ten intense months, including legal assistance, before the insurers agreed to cover the expenses.

The couple almost considered selling their home in Somerset to cover the medical costs, but eventually, the insurers relented and paid the bill along with legal fees. This incident highlights the importance of having comprehensive travel insurance, especially during pregnancy.

Ensuring top-tier coverage for their trip, which was supposed to be their final one before Issy’s maternity leave, the musicians found themselves in a predicament with the insurers despite their precautions, raising concerns about settling the bill in the absence of free healthcare in the US.

Issy, at 25, discovered her pregnancy in spring 2022 and had smooth prenatal check-ups. Apart from an increased appetite, she experienced no pregnancy symptoms. Delighted to learn they were expecting a boy, the couple continued performing until Issy’s pregnancy forced them to Nashville for a show in September 2022.

Claiming that pre-eclampsia was covered in their insurance policy’s fine print, the couple faced a sudden health scare in Nashville, leading to Issy’s diagnosis and subsequent urgent C-section at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown.

Reflecting on the challenging experience, Issy recalled the critical role a compassionate nurse played during their ordeal. Legal intervention eventually secured victory in the case, overshadowing the initial months with their newborn son.

Their recent EP, Songs That Saw Us Through, showcases songs that provided comfort during their time in the NICU with Lucky. Archie expressed hope that their music could offer solace to others undergoing similar challenges.
