An intense search is underway following the escape of two individuals from an open prison, one of whom is a convicted murderer.
Avon and Somerset Police have released new CCTV footage of Matthew Armstrong, 35, and Daniel Washbourne, 40, who absconded from HMP Leyhill on New Year’s Day. The pair left the prison between 5pm and 8pm on that day.
Armstrong, who has ties to Warwickshire, was convicted of a murder that occurred during a robbery in the late 2000s.
Following the report by staff at HMP Leyhill, officers from Avon and Somerset Police began their investigation at the prison. Detectives are currently examining several reported sightings and have conducted additional CCTV inquiries to track the movements of Armstrong and Washbourne.
There have been sightings of two individuals matching their description in Bristol. One man was seen on Ashley Road on Saturday, and another individual was captured on CCTV walking along Filton Road and Gloucester Road North in Filton on Sunday.
Authorities suspect that the absconders may have traveled outside the Avon and Somerset area to avoid detection and are collaborating with other police forces across the country.
Armstrong is described as white, approximately 5ft 9ins, with ginger hair, while Washbourne is described as white, around 5ft 6ins, slim, with brown hair. Both individuals have specific links to different regions.
A third man, Aaron Thomas, was arrested in Bristol and charged with escaping lawful custody. He appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court and is currently remanded in custody awaiting his next court appearance.
Avon and Somerset Police urge anyone with information on Armstrong and Washbourne to contact them immediately and advise the public not to approach the individuals but to call emergency services. Email updates on the latest developments are available for those interested.
