Vladimir Putin deployed the Oreshnik missile, capable of reaching speeds of 8,000mph, in a series of devastating attacks on Ukraine. The strike targeted Europe’s largest underground gas storage facility near Lviv, just 40 miles from NATO and EU borders. Concurrently, there were reports of extensive civilian casualties in Kyiv and Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown, Kryvyi Rih.
The missile, launched from Russia’s Astrakhan region, reached Lviv in under 15 minutes, causing a spectacular explosion visible in the night sky. Speculation arose about the type of ballistic weapon used, with online commentators suggesting it was an Oreshnik-class missile. Despite the Russian defense ministry acknowledging the use of the Oreshnik, claiming it was in retaliation for an alleged Ukrainian attempt on Putin’s life, Western intelligence and Ukraine denied any such attack.
Moscow’s defense ministry stated that the strike was a response to a supposed terrorist attack on Putin’s residence, targeting key Ukrainian facilities. Ukraine’s foreign minister condemned the attack as a severe threat to European security and a test for transatlantic alliances, dismissing Russia’s justifications as baseless propaganda.
This marked the second known use of the Oreshnik system in combat, following a previous incident in 2024. The missile system is currently stationed near Ukraine and NATO territories in Belarus. The strike on Lviv, originating from the Kapustin Yar range in Astrakhan, demonstrated Russia’s determination to flex its military might and escalate tensions in the region.
The attack underscored Putin’s disregard for calls to end the conflict, as multiple Ukrainian cities endured relentless bombardment. Despite the destructive power of the missiles, there was no indication of nuclear warheads being used. Putin’s strategy appears focused on instilling fear and showcasing Russia’s military capabilities, rather than causing widespread destruction.
As the conflict intensifies, with both sides exchanging deadly blows, the prospects for a peaceful resolution seem increasingly remote. The overnight assault serves as a stark reminder of the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine.
