“Health Expert: Keep Fruit and Veggie Skins for Essential Nutrients”

Many individuals may habitually discard the skin of fruits and vegetables before consumption, not realizing they could be missing out on essential nutrients, as noted by health expert Professor Tim Spector. According to Tim, the skins of produce like apples, kiwis, and potatoes contain polyphenols, a group of natural compounds that act as antioxidants, reduce inflammation, and enhance natural immunity.

Polyphenols found in plants, as per scientists, have potential anti-ageing and anticarcinogenic properties. Tim emphasized the importance of polyphenols in various aspects of health on his Channel 4 show, What Not to Eat.

He highlighted the significance of retaining the skin on fruits and vegetables to benefit from the high concentration of polyphenols, which support gut health and overall immunity. For instance, peeling an apple or a kiwi fruit can result in missing out on a substantial amount of fiber and defense chemicals.

Potatoes, when consumed with their skin intact, offer significantly higher fiber content, contributing to a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and bowel cancer, according to the NHS. Tim also recommended opting for grains or beans over white rice for a healthier dietary choice.

In addition to mealtime adjustments, Professor Tim suggested healthier snacking alternatives such as fruit, dark chocolate, or nuts to avoid sugary treats. He also promoted dark chocolate as a potential gut health booster due to its polyphenol content, emphasizing their presence in various foods like grapes, berries, peanuts, and red wine.

Polyphenols, known for their beneficial effects on gut microbes, can also be found in coffee, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, and dark chocolate, making them essential components of a polyphenol-rich diet.
